Happy birthday Both.org

0

On December 11, 2023. Both.org morphed from being simply my personal website to being a replacement for Opensource.com (OSDC). On that day, a small group of volunteers, former contributors to OSDC, began publishing articles contributed by ourselves as well as others who have things to say about Linux and open source.

Over the past year, we’ve published a steady stream of articles. With the exception of November 29th, we’ve managed at least one article per day. Our readership has grown from an average of about 3 visitors per day, to around 500 visitors and about 750 views per day. In November we had just over 700 referrals from search engines. We started using a new analytics engine on May 5 of 2024 so we don’t have full-year statistics. On Saturday, December 7, we had our 100,000th recorded visit. Between May 5 and December 10, we’ve had 101,215 visits and 192,458 page views.

Not bad for a completely volunteer project.

Both.org runs on a server I built in 2018. It has a GigaByte Z370 motherboard, an Intel I7-8700 with 6-cores and 12 CPUs at 3.6GHz overclocked to 4.2 GHz, and 32GB of RAM. This server runs on Fedora, and also runs one other website; along with my DNS, DHCP, Sendmail, IMAP, and NTP services. We use a local WordPress instance and MariaDB for the website itself. This server — along with all my other computers — also runs BOINC 24×7 in support of the World Community Grid.

If you’re wondering how Linux can work for you, Both.org is a great example.

Thanks for joining us this year. We hope you’ll continue to visit throughout 2025 and bring your friends. And please consider writing for us. We are always looking for new writers with interesting and fun things to say.
