4 ways to write your first article

At Both.org, we’re an open community of volunteer writers and editors who want to celebrate your articles about open source software. We welcome new contributors to share an article about how you use open source software or how you work in open source software, or anything else that’s about your open source story.

There are many ways to write about open source software. If you’d like to share an article but aren’t sure how to get started, here are four ways you might write your first article about open source software:

(1) Write about your favorite open source application. Maybe you use GIMP to clean up family photos, or LibreOffice Calc to manage your personal finances. You might use OBS Studio to record videos for your YouTube channel, or Audacity to listen to music. Whatever you use and however you use it, share an article about why you like using it.

(2) If you’ve written a program and shared it under an open source license, write an article to share it with our readers. You don’t have to have a traditional “developer” background to work in open source or create open source applications. Tell us where the application came from, or why you like working on it, or highlight a few things that it can do.

(3) Tell us about how you use open source software at work. Linux and open source have been part of enterprise IT environments for decades. Write an article about how you leverage open source in your organization to get work done. For example, you might write about using Apache HTTP, Nginx, or another open source web server to manage a website.

(4) Share your first experience in open source software. Whether you were a contributor or a user, we’d like to know about your first time with an open source application. You could write about what you learned about the open source project when using it for the first time, or what recommendations you’d make to someone else who might explore that same open source project as a first-time user.

We want to share your love of open source software. Feel free to write an article about your open source experience. Contact us at open@both.org to contribute your article about open source.
